Is It Possible to Have a Stress-Free Professional Photo Shoot with My Autistic Child?
As a parent of an autistic child (like myself), you may have considered professional photography but felt unsure about how it would go. The idea of scheduling a session might seem stressful. What if your child doesn’t want to cooperate? What if they get overwhelmed by the camera, environment or pressure to act/pose a certain way?
Good news! You absolutely can get beautiful, stress-free photos of your child without the worry or pressure of a traditional photo session. Here’s how a sensory-friendly photo session can make the process smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your child in The Cotswolds.
Many parents of autistic children have similar worries when considering a photo session…
Do any of these sound familiar?
“What if my child won’t sit still?”
“What if they don’t like looking at the camera?”
“What if they get overwhelmed and need a break?”
These are completely valid concerns. Traditional photo sessions can sometimes feel rigid, overstimulating, or stressful for autistic children. But sensory-friendly photography is different.
Why My Sensory-Friendly Photo Shoots Work Well for Autistic Children
1. It’s Tailored to Your Child’s Needs
Every child has different sensory preferences. Some might feel overwhelmed by bright lights or loud noises, while others may feel more comfortable in familiar surroundings. When you book a sensory-friendly photo session with me, I take the time to discuss your child’s needs beforehand, ensuring the experience is comfortable and stress-free.
2. Flexibility and Freedom
Forget about stiff poses or forced smiles. Sensory-friendly sessions focus on capturing authentic moments. Whether that’s your child running around in a beautiful park, sitting peacefully in a familiar setting or interacting with their favourite toys. The Cotswolds offers many wonderful locations perfect for capturing natural, candid shots. The key is making sure your child feels at ease.
3. No Pressure, No Rush
I don’t rush the process. Instead, I let your child take the lead. If they need a break, we take one. If they need time to warm up or get used to the camera, that’s perfectly fine. This isn’t about getting the “perfect” shot; it’s about capturing your child in the most genuine way possible, where they are enjoying the experience and when you see the final images, it will be from happy memories of that day. Not a whirlwind of chaos and stress just trying to get the “perfect” shot.
4. The Right Environment for Your Child
Whether you choose a cozy indoor session or an outdoor shoot in one of the Cotswolds’ scenic spots, I make sure the environment feels calm and familiar. Familiar surroundings can ease any anxiety, and natural settings like parks or gardens offer peaceful spaces where your child can explore and engage.
5. No Expectations, Just Comfort
There are no expectations for your child to behave in any particular way. Your child can be themselves, communicate how they do, and express their needs. I can accommodate this with my knowledge of PECS and basic Makaton. I also understand that transitions can be difficult, and we can work through them at your child’s pace. But the bottom line is, if it’s just not happening that day, that’s okay. We can always reschedule.
As an austim parent myself, I can completely relate to the situations that could come up during a photo shoot. I understand that every child is unique, and I know each of us will have our own methods that we put in place to make activities as easy as possible and avoid to meltdowns. But even then, things don’t always go to plan. I experience this with my own son sometimes when I try to take his photos. Even though I understand his needs a plan very well beforehand, there are still days when the location might feel more overwhelming that day to usual, or he’s overstimulated, tired, or just not feeling it. And that’s totally okay. When I notice this, I stop. I don’t push through because I know it’s not going to work. Instead, I hit pause and try again another time. Most often, we get the perfect shots the next time, usually within the first few minutes.
Your child can absolutely be themselves around me - there’s no need to be perfect. Excited chaos is welcome! Whether they need lots of breaks, choose not to look at the camera, or don’t engage with me at all, that’s completely fine - as long as they’re comfortable with me there. They can even ask me the “inappropriate” questions or stim loudly - I’ll probably join in if it’s a catchy tune, honestly! My goal is always to create a relaxed, happy atmosphere for everyone.
